Puzzle by Oliver Hill, edited by Will Shortz
Hidden delicatessen sandwich names were utilized in a New York Times puzzle a year ago almost to the day, and here they are again. ORGANGRINDER (20A. Cranky street performer?); GERMANSUB (36A. U-boat); SANDWEDGE (41A. Heaviest iron in a golfer’s bag); and ROMANTICHERO (50A. Don Juan, e.g.).
The Tuesday, September 11, 2007 crossword by Christina Houlihan Kelly had the same four sandwich types contained in the entries of SANDWEDGE (16A Golf club used in a bunker); MEATGRINDER (22A Butcher’s device); AMERICANSUB (44A U.S.S. Nautilus, for one); and SUPERHERO (55A Spider-Man or the Green Lantern). Incidentally, I notice that the official bloggers of The New York Times point out that the daily puzzles in this week's Times will be/were all constructed by teenagers -- I don’t know if Ms. Kelly is a teenager, but her puzzle is getting a second serving this week.
Interesting entries of this Monday crossword include KOWTOW (28A. Act obsequiously); ELAPSE (46A. Pass, as time); SEWAGE (47A. Waste at a treatment plant); GEWGAW (5D. Trinket); and WINNOW (30D. Sift). Maryland and Hawaii get paired up twice with 38A. Baltimore oriole : Maryland :: NENE : Hawaii and STATE (49D. Maryland or Hawaii).
After that, business as usual for this back-to-work-day puzzle continues with VANESSA (9D. Actress Hudgens of “High School Musical) and WAGONER (42D. Oregon Trail traveler, e.g.), followed by the remaining six-letter entries of DEBASE (27D. Lower the value of, as currency); ELIXIR (46D. Panacea); INUITS (26D. Igloo inhabitants); KANSAS (28D. Dorothy’s home in “The Wizard of Oz”); OLEATE (29D. Olive oil component); RESHIP (25D. Send a second time) and USERID (24A. Named typed in to log on).
Leftovers: AHAB, AHSO, ALIA, ALIEN, AJAR, ANTI, APART, AROMA, ARTE, ATO, AZTEC, AZURE, BAITS, BASH, BEER, BLOCK, BOZO, CHIA, DUMMY, EAT, EGGON, ELEV, ENE, EPEE, ESS, GADS, GALS, GEE, GUM, HAZY, HIYA, HOAX, ICE, LAMS, LEG, LETGO, LEVI, LTD, NENE, NEON, NONE, NUDGE, OATS, OJAI, RATTY, REHEM, RISE, SANG, SEEN, SLO, SMEAR, STATE, SUEME, TEED, VALLI, WAVE, YVES, ZANY, ZEST.
