THE COVERS OF THIS BOOK ARE TOO FAR APART (19A. Scathing review attributed to
Ambrose Bierce, Part 1; 31A. Review, part 2; 48A. Review, part 3) is the main entry of this Saturday crossword. Ambrose Bierce is the author of hundreds of quotable quotes, so with no other clue except the crosswords crossings, the puzzle can be a grim solve, especially for one finding clueless quotations anathematic.
Upstaging the long quotation are two 15-letter across entries --
STILLER AND MEARA (17A. They appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” 36 times) and GREENHOUSE GASES (50A. “Hot” political topic). Four eight-letter entries ensue -- HILLTOPS (52A. Where sledders start); MANIACAL (15A. Mad); SCAVENGE (10D. Be a garbage collector); TARHEELS (31D. Cape Fear natives).
Seven-letter -- AUSTRIA (34D. Wienerwald’s whereabouts); DEVIOUS (14D. Not on the level); KINDRED (33D. Like-minded);
MR BONES (26A. Minstrel percussionist); PAROLES (11D. Releases from a spring board?); TURKEYS (36A. They’re often stuffed); YOO HOO (37D. “Hello-o-o!”).
Six-letter --
ANTHEM (2D. It’s often played before the first play); DARING (53A. Strikingly original); INDOOR (8D. Like some plumbing); LETS GO (42D. Chooses to 46-Down); MUSTER (1D. Summon); OPERAS (32D. They’re seen at Venice’s La Fenice); PHASIC (40D. Occurring in stages); RANDOM (7D. Free, but not for free); RESORB (18D. Break down and assimilate); SLANTS (12D. They’re not on the level) and SLOOPS (38D. Cousins of cutters); SPIELS (3D. Hucksters’ deliveries); TO RENT (41D. Letter’s sign); TOUGHS (36D. Ruffians); UNPAID (13A. Like some leaves).
Five-letter --
BOARS (23D. Sources of some leather) sharing the clue with the four-letter EELS; BOISE (25D. Snake feeder); BRACE (27D. Pair); CHAKA (28D. Grammy winner Khan); COURT (28A. Pursue, in a way); EPICS (35A. Big productions); IS TOO (22A. Grade school comeback); MASTS (1A. Brig pair); OF USE (45D. Valuable); O LORD (44A. Prayer start); RECTO (56A. Half a leaf); SMART (6D. Whiplike?); SPARE (46D. Show clemency); TALCS (4D. Baby showers?).
Short stuff -- AAAS, AGAR, BELT, BOO, EELS and ELS, ENE, IMF, OSE, OSHA, PTL, RAGS, RMS, SASS, SHOE, SILO, SRI, TOE, TNT, UAE and UTE,
USPS (9A. Org. that trademarked “Pony Express” in 2006), and VON.
