Four infinitive synonyms for the word "SPLIT" (TO DIVORCE, TO PULL UP STAKES, TO GO FIFTY FIFTY and TO SHATTER), along with SPLIT INFINITIVE (37A. Grammatical infelicity … or what 17-, 23-, 48- or 60-Across is?) constitutes the interrelated group of this witty Wednesday crossword. Not to be found in today’s crossword, however, is a split infinitive, an English-language grammatical construction in which a word or phrase, usually an adverb or adverbial phrase, comes between the marker to and the bare infinitive (uninflected) form of a verb (Wikipedia); e.g., “to boldly go…”

  1. I think "to fifty-fifty go" would be a split infinitive. I don't see how the others are. The adverb "splitting" the marker "to" and the infinite verb is missing. To angrily divorce, to vindictively shatter,to hurriedly pull up stakes are split infinitives.

  2. If the end of the clue for 37 across was "are?" instead of "is?" I would get it. They are infinitives and they are separated from each other.

  4. There are no "split infinitives", there are only "infinitive" synonyms for the word "SPLIT".
