On the contrary, I probably would not have been able to complete the puzzle without it. I figured out endnotes before any of the other long across clues and literati right after, partially based on the -ti. From there it was quick work to see that they were in fact in order of the scale (based on the probable -do ending of an Italian music direction word, which I didn't remember).
