This past year in New York City, a carriage driver was seen beating his horse as it lay upon the ground on Broadway -- many took it that he was beating a dead horse, but in fact the horse was very much alive, which caused even more consternation among the new-born animal lovers. In fact, the way to get a horse which has fallen to rise from the ground is to beat it until it rises. If it doesn't rise, then there is a good possibility it is dead or will be in time!
