Puzzle by Jules P. Markey / Edited by Will Shortz

JUMP (69A. Word that can precede each set of circled letters, forming a literal hint for entering certain answers in the puzzle).  Across answers in circles SUIT, SEAT, ROPE, BALL, BAIL and SHIP are intended to include aforesaid JUMP. In the case of the down answers, the circled letters are to be “jumped”, e.g., ignored. If this were jump rope, most solvers would be flat on their face on the sidewalk. It all adds up to a very clumsy Thursday crossword.

Across “jumps” in order: SUITEMATE (17A. One sharing an apartment), LET’S EAT (21A. “Chow down!”), EUROPEANS (33A. Poles, e.g.), CAT BALLOU (43A. Film for which Lee Marvin won Best Actor), BAILEY’S (53A. Big Irish cream brand) and COURTSHIP (61A. Engagement precursor).

Down “jumps” in order, sort of: ZIST, ISUH, GEIE, SETA, UNSSEALELD, ITEEN, SIRAI (12D. Phone voice?), PLETD, WRPA, MOOTORLIST, ESKIPMOS, KAMPALEA, RETARREAT,, OLLA, SBAMPRAS, IBMAC, BAAMA, AIFAR, RSAJ, AHPU, DIEM and EPXP.
